Last Week, I Vacuumed a Typewriter

Blogging makes us want to try new thingsLike last week, I vacuumed a typewriter.
Yes, because of Blogland, I pulled this 1940 Underwood typewriter out of storage in our garage and I vacuumed it.
I've seen a lot of typewriters in posts and I thought to myself.....
I have one of those in the garage. HUMMMM......

I decided to update the desk in our family room and
used the typewriter as my starting point.

This is what my desk looked like before I started my project.

I took everything off the top of the desk and started over.
I borrowed this old wicker tray from my mom.
It belonged to my great-grandmother.
The other items are just things I already had in the house.

Here's a close-up of a picture that I already had on the desk.
I decided it should stay because I haven't had it on the desk for very long.
I added the vintage bottle of ink that you can see on left corner below the picture frame.
Now the picture....this is a special picture.
It was made in 1962 of my great-aunt at the newspaper office in our town.
I think the picture looks great in the frame that looks like vintage newspaper type.
I can remember seeing type that looked like
that in the newspaper office when I was a little girl.

Here's just the photo itself.

If you look in the background to the right....do you see it?
YEP!  It's the desk!!!!
The desk that is in my family room.

It used to be in the newspaper office years ago.
I can remember that it was dark and dirty
with ink when I was a girl.  But in the 70's (when I was a teen),
it was cleaned-up and refinished and it has been in
my home ever since.  And one  more thing
about the desk....it used to belong to my great-uncle who
was born in 1892 .  And, before that, the desk belonged to
HIS daddy and was in his law office...
so this desk is OLD!

Here's another shot of my changes.

I am enjoying the changes that I have made to the desk!
And now I can say that I have vacuumed a typewriter!!

THANK you BLOGLAND!

What an incredible feeling to have something that old from your family. The stories that desk could tell. Treasure it. Looks great with the old typewrite on it. What other way could you get the dust, etc. out of the typewriter? Love that old desk, you're lucky to have it.

Wow - what amazing pieces to have - and that they belong to YOUR family and are not from an antique store or something - that's precious! I have very little from my family. One grandmother didn't like "old" stuff. In the 1970's, she bought all new glass & brass stuff. I thought it was cool then. She sold lots of stuff in garage sales. The other grandmother remarried and didn't outlive her second husband, so his children got everything. My MOM is a keeper, but she's not much older than me! SO, I go to garage sales and buy other people's heirlooms, and I'm ok with that!

You are SO right that blogging inspires you to change things and vacuum typewriters! I'm glad for that, too.

I love seeing meaningful things in homes and it's nice to know you don't always have to buy a bunch of things to have a new look. You did a great job of putting all your family memories together. I love the typewriter and the desk, and of course you had to add the picture of your Great Aunt since she was at the newspaper office and the desk was in th pictures.

Thanks so much for sharing our post at Your Cozy Home Party this week!

Loveee all of your stuff, especially the desk. I sooo love the history behind any vintage pieces. It's always a plus and more meaningful when you know that. Found you via a blog hop and now a new follower.

Love, love your old typewriter. It looks so great there on the desk.
I would love to find an old one at the auction or yard sale sometime along.
Thanks for sharing.

Love all the stories. How cool is that, that you know where the desk came from and it's history. And to have that photo to show it is so sweet!
